VDI 3957 BLATT 20

Biological measuring techniques for the determination and evaluation of effects of air pollutants (biomonitoring) - Mapping of lichens to indicate local climate change

active, Most Current
Organization: VDI
Publication Date: 1 July 2017
Status: active
Page Count: 35
ICS Code (Ambient atmospheres): 13.040.20
scope:

The standardized mapping of epiphytic lichens enables spatial and temporal comparisons of lichen occurrence. It provides information on the living conditions of these organisms in the study area, both in terms of air pollution as well as of the prevailing local conditions.

The recording of lichens which have been classified as indicators of climate change allows for

• the detection, evaluation and documentation of climate change impacts on the living environment in a specific local or regional area,

• the documentation of an influence on biodiversity by climatic changes in the sense of an "early warning system",

• the support of public relations of municipal or regional authorities by identifying a general need for environmental awareness and climate protection measures, as well as

• a timely planning of customized location concepts in forestry, urban development, nature conservation and landscaping, and a sustainable care and management of agricultural and green space.

Due to the definition of particular lichens as indicators of impacts of climate change ("climate change indicator"), the scope is limited to Germany
