This International Standard specifies a basic method ofdetermining the particle size distribution applicable to a widerange of mineral soil materials, including the mineral fraction oforganic soils. It also offers procedures to deal with the lesscommon soils mentioned in the introduction. This InternationalStandard has been developed largely for use in the field ofenvironmental science, and its use in geotechnical investigationsis something for which professional advice might be required. Amajor objective of this International Standard is the determinationof enough size fractions to enable the construction of a reliableparticle-size-distribution curve.
