This standard describes how the energy management system fits into the MES, the extent to which an MES can support energy management and how this MES task is related to other MES tasks. Correspondingly, this standard describes various modules whose implementation is decisive for the success and effectiveness of energy management.

This standard can help to define recommendations for specific action and demonstrate the advantages of an integrated MES solution. It was primarily compiled for discrete manufacturing operations and, in particular, for their corporate management, process management, organization development, production management and for all persons involved in the selection and implementation of an MES. It also provides important information for consultants as well as for MES software suppliers and integrators.
