Introduction

This Track Work Instruction covers how to remove an AD or BJB sleeper. It also applies to other types of concrete sleeper that have a through-bolt type of fixing such as the rare RNB or RD sleeper.

The AD and BJB sleepers have four fixing bolts that are approximately 50mm higher than the top of the sleeper. These are an integral part of the sleeper and can only be removed by use of a disc cutter or by burning off.

(When the AD sleepers were originally made, the bolts were fixed with a pin that passed through the side of the sleeper and locked with each bolt. These pins will now be rusted solid and there will be little chance of being able to release them).
