Introduction
This trackwork instruction explains how to use a vibrating plate compactor (e.g. Whacker plate).
This type of equipment could be used to compact a ballast bed after reballasting with the track removed.
If it's not used properly, little advantage will be gained.
If used correctly, the ballast will be well compacted and the track will stand with good geometry for a long period.
Vibrating plate compactors are useful tools for installing or reinstating walkways in depots.
