Introduction

This Track Work Instruction gives an appreciation of the use of mobile flash butt welding machines.

Flash butt welding is a much more reliable and quicker method of welding than traditional Thermit welding.

Flash butt welding has, until recent years, been confined to the factory to form strings of rail - these strings then being brought to site to form CWR. The introduction of mobile flash butt welding machines has enabled the considerable advantages of this welding technique to be available on site.
