Introduction
This Track Work Instruction covers how to manage the use of detonators.
Detonators are carried by: lookouts, handsignallers and track inspectors. They are also used to protect worksites under the various forms of possession. They are not just for use in emergencies, but are handled, carried and stored in considerable numbers on a daily basis.
Detonators must be managed to ensure that they are available as required, but also to ensure that they are safe, secure and in date.
The use of the term detonator is common, and appears in the Rule Book, but the proper name is 'Railway Fog Signal' - under the various regulations that control explosives, etc.
Network Rail Company Specifications set out the regulations.
