The certification criteria deal with safety philosophy, quality assurance and engineering integrity and specify requirements for the safety of wind turbines, including design, installation, maintenance, and operation under specified environmental conditions. The purpose is to provide the appropriate level of protection against damage from all hazards from these systems during their planned lifetime. The criteria apply to factory-made, mass-produced, electricity-producing wind turbines connected to the electrical power network which have a horizontal axis and a rotor swept area equal to or larger than 40 m².
