This standard relates only to single-turn rotary types of power potentiometers with a rated power dissipation normally greater than or equal to 10 W, intended for use in electronic equipment. Potentiometers covered by this standard are not normally of a construction incorporating seals. Low power precision potentiometers and other potentiometers of basically different design are dealt with in separate sectional specifications. The object of this standard is to prescribe preferred ratings and characteristics, to select from IEC Publication 393-1 the appropriate methods of test and to give general performance requirements for potentiometers falling within its scope. Test severities and requirements prescribed in detail specifications referring to this sectional specification have to be of equal or higher performance level, because degradations are normally not permitted.
