This standard lays down names and symbols of quantities for the purpose of designing and calculating building structures. The standard also gives rules for selecting letters to form symbols, for those cases the standard has not provided for. The standard applies to symbols and names of quantities for general use, necessary in this field of application and does not include symbols and names that apply only to certain materials or to certain specialisms (e.g. foundations). This standard must also be used in standards, regulations and trade literature.
