Within the framework of the general requirements set forth in Part 1.1, this part of the Code contains design Principles, Criteria and Application Rules applicable to the earthquake resistant design of bridges. The Code covers primarily the seismic design of bridges in which the horizontal seismic actions are mainly resisted either at the abutments or through bending of the piers i.e. bridges composed of vertical or near vertical pier systems supporting the traffic deck superstructures. It can also be applied for the seismic design of other bridge type such as arch bridges, portal or tied bridges, and cable stayed bridges.
