General

This standard describes procedures for the selection, surface preparation, application, and inspection of a coating system used to protect the interior surfaces of new and used rail tank cars for transportation of molten sulfur. Appendix A (nonmandatory) describes essential facilities and equipment for the application of a coating system to the interior of rail tank cars. Appendix B (nonmandatory) contains a suggested rail tank car coating system inspection report form.

The term "molten sulfur" broadly refers to sulfur in its liquid state. Molten sulfur begins to solidify at temperatures from 110 to 120°C (230 to 246°F) and is reheated to temperatures from 140 to 150°C (284 to 302°F) for handling. Factors that could affect corrosion characteristics include the presence of impurities (ash and carbon), moisture, and gases.

Liquid coatings used in this standard may be hazardous. Basic safety precautions regarding the handling and application of these materials and solvents shall therefore be used (NACE Publication TPC 22 contains more detailed information). The material safety data sheet (MSDS) supplied by the coating manufacturer provides additional information relative to the coating and current applicable regulations.
