Acceptance criteria are given for the package when tested by specified methods. These methods not only provide a measure of the effectiveness of the package in restricting access by children but also cover the accessibility to the contents by adults. Reclosable packages for any product intended to be exposed or removed from the packages are covered by the procedures. Means of performing the test on a series of similar packages are given in annex A and guidance for persons carrying out the tests is given in annex A and guidance for persons carrying out the test is given in annexes B and C. According to the department of Trade and Industry in the United Kingdom, poisining by solids and liquids accounted for 1 in 25 accidents to children under the age of 4 and represented nearly 28788 poisonings nationwide in 1999 alone. While child-resitant packages proved effective in prebenting children from opening or gaining access to hazardous contents, they have raised concerns over de the difficulty of adults in opening the package, particularly among the elderly and the physically disabled, This edition includes a new test for adults between 50 and 70.
