These rules apply to rotating electrical machines forming part of the equipment of electrically propelled rail and road vehicles. The vehicles may obtain power either from an external supply or from an internal source. Electrical inputs or outputs of machines covered by these rules may be of the following types: a)direct current (including rectified multi-phase); b)pulsating current (rectified single-phase alternating current); c)single-phase alternating current; d) multi-phase alternating current (in general 3-phase). All the above inputs or outputs may be synthesised and/or varied by phase or pulse control.
