scope:
This standard describes the preparation of methyl esters of fatty acids of vegetable and animal oils and fats, as well as of methyl esters of fatty acids of random origin. The methyl ester obtained can be analyzed by means of haschromatography, thin layer chromatography and infrared spectrophotometry. The general method described in Ch. 4 can be used for the preparation of methyl esters of fatty acids with 6 or more arbon atoms, staring from oils, fats or fatty acids. If an accurate determination of the content of fatty acids with 4.6 or 8 atoms is required of oils or fats with an acid value smaller than 2, it is recommended to use the method described in Ch. 5.
