Preface
The Water-Based Fire Protection Systems Handbook came about due to the interest expressed by the many individuals charged with maintaining the operational status of water-based fire protection systems. The questions presented in advisory service calls and the intriguing discussions encountered during the NFPA 25 Seminar made clear the many issues faced by those enforcing the standard or those charged with the hands-on work to keep systems functioning. These issues led to the development of the first edition and the update to the second edition. The commentary and supplements contained in this handbook are designed to help readers to understand better both the intent behind the requirements and the function of the system and components themselves.
Whereas the commentary is intended to clarify the requirements of NFPA 25, the handbook as a whole is designed to provide a training tool for those involved in performing the work and those involved in maintaining the operability of fire protection systems in their properties. Throughout the book, numerous references are made to activities that can be accomplished by the property owner. Supplements such as "The Role of the Inspector'' are intended to outline the qualifications and responsibilities of the inspector who works for the fire protection contractor. Each chapter contains a review question section to permit use of this handbook as a textbook for formal or individual training. The handbook can also be used in preparation for certification or licensing testing.
