Specifies two methods for the determination of acetic acid yield of unplasticized cellulose acetate by alkaline hydrolysis. In method A a test portion of fine powdered celluloseacetate (particle size below 710 m) is reacted in a water-acetone mixture with an excess of standard volumetric sodium hydroxide solution. In method B the test portion is dissolved in dimethylsulfoxide and then reacted with sodium hydroxide solution. In both cases the quantity of sodium hydroxide consumed for hydrolysis is determined by backtitration.
