NTA 8545-1 explains the purpose and scope of all three parts of the NTA and the fundamental principles underlying the development of the NTA. The overall purpose of this NTA is to provide the process industry plant engineering supply chain with a roadmap up to the year 2020 for knowledge management in maintenance with requirements for the distinct phases the industry will need to go through and with an implementation guide on how to implement the roadmap requirements in practice. This NTA will enable the process industry to meet knowledge management requirements that are a fundamental part of the asset management and knowledge management systems requirements of a company. Companies are required to have installations that are reliable, safe, environmentally friendly, efficient and effective, maintained and operated by competent staff. The process industry has decided that the approach described in this NTA is suitable to achieve this goal. This part of the NTA: - provides an understanding of all three parts of the NTA; - explains the main components of the NTA; - explains how the three parts of the NTA relate to each other and to other relevant standards; - explains how the parts of the NTA will be maintained; - explains how the parts can be used by the stakeholders. This NTA is applicable to knowledge management in maintenance activities in the process industry. This NTA is primarily targeted at the process industry plant engineering supply chain that comprises of asset owners, (EPC) contractors and equipment suppliers. The asset owner is the end client company which owns the assets and is responsible for operation and maintenance of the plants and installations. The (EPC) contractor is responsible for design, detailed engineering, construction and commissioning of the plant jointly with the asset owner. The equipment suppliers provide all equipment used to construct the plant. Most of the components are delivered by OEMs.
