Specifies the essential functional requirements and characteristics of an emergency roadside telephone suitable for installation alongside roads and used by the road user to seek assistance in an emergency. This standard also provides guidance in the form of informative annexes, on the preferred operating characteristics of the emergency roadside telephone system and safety issues to be considered when siting the telephones on the road network. The standard itself and its annexes regulates the requirements in view of the user only. It is not applicable to warning and assistance systems not specifically intended for the general road user e.g. toll plaza and service station system, public call boxes, or telephones provided exclusively for members of private motoring clubs. The standard refers to two types of emergency roadside telephones: Type A A loud speaker or "hands free" telephone; Type B A conventional telephone with telephone handset.
