This European standard specifies requirements, test methods, the marking and evaluation of conformity for packaged and/or on site assembled tertiary treatment units (with its container or to be installed in an existing container [retrofit unit]) used for treated wastewater normally coming from: products according to EN 12566-3, products according to EN 12566-6, installations according to TR 12566-5. This standard covers the following processes (see definitions clause 3): Biological processes: slow filtration with or without vegetation (sand, gravel, peat, activated carbon, other media filtration), Physical processes: filtration (sand, gravel, peat, activated carbon, other media), cartridge and drum membranes, reverse osmosis, ultra-filtration, Chemical processes: dosing with chlorine or ozone, dosing with iron or aluminium derivatives for flocculation, Electrical processes: ultra-violet, electrolysis. It covers only tertiary treatment units that are provided alone. It applies to packaged and site assembled tertiary treatment units that are tested and sold as a whole. Tertiary treatment systems forming part of products covered by EN 12566-3 and EN 12566-6 are not covered by this standard; they are considered as part of the products covered by the relevant standard (EN 12566-3 and EN 12566-6). It covers units with tanks made of concrete, steel, PVC-U, Polyethylene (PE), Glass Reinforced Polyester (GRP-UP) and Polypropylene (PP). These products are intended to be either watertight without any infiltration into the ground or, in some installations, installed with direct infiltration of the tertiary treated effluent (open units) into the ground. This standard applies to tertiary treatment units for use on the top of the ground (inside or outside the building) or buried in the ground where no vehicle loads are applied to the product.
