NEN-ISO 9241-4

Ergonomic requirements for office work with visual display terminals (VDTs) - Part 4: Keyboard requirements

inactive, Most Current
Organization: NEN
Publication Date: 1 October 1995
Status: inactive
ICS Code (IT terminal and other peripheral equipment): 35.180
ICS Code (Ergonomics): 13.180
scope:

This part is concerned with the ergonomic design of keyboards. Its aim is to influence the design of keyboards so that the biomechanical, and physiological limitations and capabilities of users are considered in the keyboard design. It provides guidance based on ergonomics factors for keyboard layout arrangements, the physical characteristics of the individual keys and the overall design of the housing containing the keys. Its provisions cover keyboards used for typical office tasks. However, they may be applied in analogy to other areas. An alternative compliance route is also provided, based on a user performance test and subjective rating scales. The standard therefore: (a) considers keyboards that conform to ISO/IEC 9995 and specifies additional requirements that make them ergonomically satisfactory; (b) provides a means of testing the performance and comfort of keyboards that are not covered by (a); (c) defines conformance requirements with respect to either (a) of (b).
