This code of practice treats a number of background of the direct membrane filtration technique for the examination of Escherichia coli in water in accordance with NEN 6261 and elucidates aspects that require special attention. The description of this method given in NEN 6261 is based on the mutual research of eight Dutch laboratories. The purpose of this research was to develop an evaluation of the direct plating method for the examination of foodstuffs and to contribute to the standardization of this method for the examination of water.
