Part 6 consists of three major components, as follows: Section 6.1: This first document establishes the overall context of part 6, describing exactly what part 6 is to contain, what format it will take, and the application and communication context to which it applies. This includes document structure, domain of application, requirements, reference communication network configurations, and the form in which the standards will be developed. Description of OSI Layers, base standards, and network management; guidelines and directions for the use of base standards withing the context of part 6. Functional Profiles; the description of how to use standards from the different layers to implement a well-defined function. It is the Functional Profiles which will become standards.
