scope:
This standard applies to essemblies for the measurement of ambient dose equivalent and directional dose equivalent from external beta, X and gamma radiation, as recommended in ICRU Report 39 (1985). It applies directly to the measurement of beta radiation of energies up to 4 MeV and X and gamma radiation of energies up to 10 MeV. It applies, in particular, to assemblies intended for the determination of the dose equivalent or dose equivalent rate from external beta and/or X and gamma radiation for radiation protection purposes. In this document the expression "dose equivalent (rate)"is used when the provisions apply to both the measurement of dose equivalent and the measurement of dose equivalent rate. It may not apply directly in cases, such as in medical radiology which is within the scope of TC 62, where the conditions of radiation exposure may be extremely inhomogeneous but precisely known. It does not apply directly to instruments intended to be worn by an individual for the purpose of estimating the radiation dose received by that individual. The purpose of this standard is to specify the performance characteristics of assemblies intended for the determination of dose equivalent as defined in ICRU Report 39 (1985). Accordingly, this standard: a) specifies the functions and performance characteristics of measuring assemblies; b) specifies the methods of test to be used to determine compliance with the requirements of this standard.
