Telemedicine is part of a much larger range of information and communications technology (ICT) applications within the healthcare sector also known as e-health. Initially, ICT was mainly used within healthcare institutions such as hospitals. In more recent years, new forms of care have been introduced in which thanks to ICT allow healthcare practitioners, irrespective of their location, work together with other practitioners and with the care consumers. Some of these new forms of care are being referred to as telemedicine.
