This standard describes a method for determining the resistance of rubber floor coverings to abrasion using a rotating cylindrical drum device and non-rotating sample holder. The method involves determining the volume loss of a rubber test piece through abrasion action by rubbing over a specified grade of abrasive cloth. Because factors such as the grade of abrasive particles and adhesive used in the manufacture of the cloth, and contamination and wear by previous testing, lead to variations in the absolute values of abrasion loss, all tests are comparative. Standard rubbers are included in order that the results may be expressed either as a relative volume loss referred to a calibrated abrasive cloth, or an abrasion resistance index referred to a standard rubber.
