Dieses Dokument beschreibt die für den Korrosionsschutz von Stahlbauten allgemein verwendeten Arten von Beschichtungsstoffen und Beschichtungssystemen.

Es gibt außerdem eine Anleitung für die Auswahl von Beschichtungssystemen, für verschiedene Umgebungsbedingungen (siehe ISO 12944-2), mit Ausnahme der Korrosivitätskategorie CX und der Kategorie Im4 nach ISO 12944-2 und verschiedener Oberflächenvorbereitungsgrade (siehe ISO 12944-4), und die zu erwartende Schutzdauer (siehe ISO 12944-1).
