Safety Color Code for Educational and Training Laboratories
|Publication Date:||1 June 2018|
Purpose and Scope
The purpose of this Engineering Practice is to establish a safety color code for educational and training laboratories to alert and inform persons to take precautionary or other appropriate action in the presence of hazards.
This Engineering Practice is intended to improve personal safety in the laboratory during the operation and use of tools, equipment, machinery and associated materials, thus minimizing the possibility of accident or injury.
This Engineering Practice is intended to help promote uniform identification of potential hazards in all educational and training activities.
This Engineering Practice designates the safety colors and their applications for specific purposes in these laboratories.
This Engineering Practice shall apply to the use of safety color coding for the identification of physical hazards, the identification of piping and the location of safety equipment, protective equipment, stationary machinery and laboratory equipment used in educational and training experiences.
This Engineering Practice shall apply to existing structures, facilities, equipment and machinery, to subsequent modifications and additions, and to new structures.
This Engineering Practice specifies color codes for safety only. The primary purpose of this code is to promote safety in educational and training activities. The use of color is not a substitute for engineering and administrative controls, including training, to eliminate identifiable hazards. In addition, hazard control and accident prevention are dependent upon awareness, concern, and prudence of personnel involved in the operation, transport, maintenance and storage of laboratory equipment, and the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities.
It is the intent of this Engineering Practice to be in agreement with existing relevant standards and regulations. This Engineering Practice shall apply the use of safety colors to minimize the possibility of accident or injury. It sets forth the specifications of safety colors for as wide a range of materials as possible to satisfy the many applications of these colors in educational and training laboratories.
