This Defence Standard (DEF STAN) is applicable to all HM Surface Ships and Royal Fleet Auxiliaries (RFA). It defines the requirements for providing ventilation, air-conditioning and equipment cooling in surface ships, the standards to which the various systems associated with these functions are to be designed, manufactured and installed.

The requirements for air-conditioning, ventilating, purging and air purification in HM Submarines are covered by DEF STAN 08-159 Part 2.
