This specification covers the properties of glass fiber bonded sheet of materials that may be used for thermal insulation and noise control in the engine compartment and other nonpassenger areas of vehicles.
Material Description.
The materials identified by this specification are composed of glass fibers in a sheet form and shall be resilient, flexible, and homogeneous. The material shall be free of excessive dust out, lumps, binder spots, cracks and shingling effects. The sheet may be of a laminated construction. The sheet must not transfer fibers to the hand during shipping, handling, or installation in the car.
Material Identification.
Type I materials utilizes an inert binder which is primarily composed of a phenol resin.
Type II materials utilizes a binder system where the phenol resin content is < 50% by weight of the total binder content. Type II materials provide improved material handling and reduced dust out.
