Status: inactive
Page Count: 2
scope:

This standard describes the requirements for different types of thermally protective sleeves for the shielding of components from a radiant heat source.

Material Description.

The products qualified to this specification shall be comprised of either a textile-based substrate or an aluminum foil substrate, or any combination of the two substrates permanently bonded. The material composite shall be suitable for use in applications located throughout the vehicle, but, most often within the engine compartment.

Dependent on the construction of the laminating layers, all types may be used as reflective or insulating thermal sleeves.

Classification.

Materials qualified to this specification shall be listed under class and type. Class I materials shall be listed for those materials where excursion temperatures will not exceed 200°C. Class II materials will be specified for those areas where normal operating temperatures may exceed 200°C. Different type constructions are listed under each type.

Specific material thicknesses will be called out on associated product drawings.

Type 1: Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Fiber Substrate.

Materials will consist of a 100% PET polyester braided, woven or non-woven substrate laminated to aluminum or an aluminized film or foil outer layer.

Type 2: Fiberglass/PET Substrate.

Materials consist of hybrid fiberglass/PET polyester woven or braided fabric adhered to an aluminized film foil using a hot melt or pressure sensitive adhesive.

Type 3: Fiberglass Substrate.

Materials will consist of a 100% fiberglass; braided, woven or non-woven substrate adhered to an aluminum foil using a pressure sensitive adhesive.

Aluminum Foil Laminates.

Type 4A:

Materials consists of woven fiberglass inner layer, mechanically bonded to aluminum foil outer layer with a thermo-set adhesive.

Type 4B:

Materials consist of a 100% braided or woven fiberglass adhered to aluminum foil with a thermo-set adhesive.

Aluminum Foil and Fiberglass Laminates.

Type 5A:

Consists of an aluminum foil inner and outer layer with or without a woven fiberglass inner layer. Materials are mechanically bonded using a thermo-set adhesive.

Type 5B:

Woven or braided fiberglass impregnated with a silicon or acrylic adhesive.

Stainless Steel Foil/Fiberglass and Fiberglass Substrates.

Type 6A:

Stainless steel foil inner and outer layers with a woven fiberglass inner layer mechanically bonded and sealed.

Type 6B:

Woven or braided fiberglass impregnated with a silicon or acrylic adhesive.
