GENERAL-PURPOSE INDUCTION MOTORS

The electrical industry classifies motors as small kilowatt or integral kilowatt. In this context, kilowatt refers to power output of the motor. Small kilowatt motors have ratings of less than 0.75 kW at 1700 to 1800 rpm for four-pole and 3500 to 3600 rpm for twopole machines. Single-phase motors are readily available through 4 kW and are most common through 0.6 kW, because motors larger than 0.6 kW are usually three phase.

Table 3 lists motors by types indicating the normal power range and type of power supply. All motors listed are suitable for either direct or belt drive, except shaded-pole motors (limited by low starting torque).
