This Standard specifies requirements for masonry units for walling built in accordance with AS 3700 and NZS 4230.

The masonry units covered by this Standard include those made of the following materials:

(a) Autoclaved aerated concrete.

(b) Calcium silicate (sand-lime).

(c) Concrete (dense or lightweight).

(d) Dimension stone (cut or dressed).

(e) Fired clay (with or without shale).

Dimension stone has a wide variety of characteristics. These are not fully covered by the requirements of this Standard.

Tiles, or similar, that are intended to be rigidly fixed or suspended are not within the scope of this Standard.

This Standard does not specify requirements for masonry units other than requirements for the verification of their nominated characteristic values.

NOTES:

1 Guidance on means for demonstrating compliance with this Standard is given in Appendix B.

2 Guidance on the determination of characteristic value is given in Appendix C.

3 Guidance on the content of a purchasing agreement is given in Appendix D.

4 Guidance on optional testing is given in Appendix E.

5 Some non-rectilinear shapes for walling units are not illustrated in this Standard; however, this Standard may be used, but not all test methods mentioned may be applicable to such shapes.
