Rubber and plastics hoses and hose assemblies - Determination of permeability to gas (ISO/DIS 4080:2008)

| ICS Code (Hoses and hose assemblies): | 23.040.70 |
scope:
This International Standard specifies three methods for the determination of the volume of gas diffusing through a rubber or plastics hose or tubing in a specified time:
Method 1: For determining the permeability of the complete hose or tubing, excluding end-fittings, to the test gas. This method is used when evaluating gas permeability characteristics of hoses and tubing. The permeability based on the hose or tubing length.
Method 2: For determining the permeability of the hose lining and the reinforcement to the test gas. This method is used when determining the permeability characteristics of hoses with an unpricked cover when the gas usually issues from the textile reinforcement at the cut ends. The permeability based on the hose length.
Method 3: For determining precisely the permeability of a hose/assembly to the test gas. The permeability is based on the surface area of the lining of the hose.
The methods are applicable only to test gases, which are insoluble in water.
NOTES:
1. Although the results are expressed in the same units for Methods 1 and 2, the results obtained may not be comparable when using unpricked and a pricked hose for the same application, as the specified test times are different and therefore that rate of permeability could vary.
2. Method 3 is the preferred method.
