scope:
This specification covers alternating current (ac) and direct current (dc) motor controllers and associated switching devices. Included are manual and magnetic controllers, controller parts, limit switches, pressure switches, temperature switches, selector switches, push-buttons, and similar devices used for control of electric motors. Semiconductor (solid-state) devices used as parts for magnetic controllers are included.
Controllers shall be designated in the following form and as specified (see 6.2 and 6.11). Beneficial comments (recommendations, additions, deletions) and any pertinent data which may be of use in improving this document should be addressed to: Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command, SEA 55Z3, Department of the Navy, Washington, DC 20362-5101 by using the self-addressed Standardization Document Improvement Proposal (DD Form 1426) appearing at the end of this document or by letter.
The power shall be designated by the corresponding one letter symbol and is limited to the following:
AC - Alternating current DC - Direct current
Controllers shall be designated by the corresponding two letter symbols as follows:
MN - Manual MG - Magnetic
Configuration shall be designated by the corresponding letter symbols as follows:
AL - Across-the-line AU - Reduced voltage, autotransformer SI - Reduced voltage, primary resistor AC - Reduced voltage, primary reactor WD - Reduced voltage, wye-delta RR - Reduced voltage, resistor (dc) PW - Part winding
Size of the controller shall be designated by the numerical value (see 3.21.1, tables IV and V).
The protective feature shall be designated by the corresponding letter symbol as follows:
P - Low voltage protection R - Low voltage release
Contactors shall be designated in the following form and as specified (see 6.2 and 6.11).
The number of poles or main contacts shall be designated by the corresponding numerical value.
The number of normally open auxiliary contacts shall be designated by the corresponding numerical value.
The number of normally closed auxiliary contacts shall be designated by the corresponding numerical value.
Associated switching devices and controller parts shall be designated in the following form and as specified (see 6.2 and 6.11).
The equipment type shall be designated by the corresponding letter symbols as follows:
ASD - Associated switching device CTP - Controller part
The device or part shall be designated by the corresponding letter symbols as follows:
R - Relay TDR - Time delay relay CR - Current relay CTR - Control relay OLR - Overload PS - Pressure switch TS - Temperature switch LS - Limit switch SS - Selector switch PBS - Pushbutton switch XS - Transfer switch PXS - Proximity switch PST - Pushbutton station MS - Master switch FS - Float switch DS - Drum switch

Controllers, controller parts, and associated switching devices covered by this specification are intended for surface and submarine use. For special duty see 3.7.
