Organization: ATIS
Publication Date: 1 April 1994
Status: active
Page Count: 37
scope:

This technical report discusses the use of synchronization status messages for management of synchronization networks. Synchronization status messages are defined in the Z1 byte of the SONET overhead for OC-N signals and as bit-patterned messages in the Extended Super frame (ESF) data link for DS1 signals. This report discusses the definition of the messages, how NEs can use the messages for synchronization reference selection, and descriptions of the data channels for carrying these messages.

It is not the intention of this document to address all applications of synchronization status messages, nor give specific design guidelines, nor specific equipment requirements. The specific applications and associated equipment requirements for synchronization status messages are user dependent and would be expected to be documented by them elsewhere. The DS1 and SONET messages and bit mapping formats are contained in their respective format specifications (i.e., T1.403 T1.105).
