SCOPE OF METHOD
The method as described is not specific for trichloroethylene. Chlorinated hydrocarbon vapors in general give a similar reaction, and produce similar colors. Tetrachloroethane by this procedure produces colors, of approximately the same intensity, and chloroform colors of approximately five times the intensity, of those given by equivalent amounts of trichloroethylene. The interference of carbon tetrachloride in this procedure is practically negligible unless it is present in large amounts.
This method is designed for use in testing the atmosphere in shops where trichloroethylene is known to be the only solvent in use. It is satisfactory for the determination of trichloroethylene over the range 0.02-0.3 mg.
PURPOSE OF METHOD
Trichloroethylene is used as a solvent, and as a degreasing agent. Though it is less toxic than most of the chlorinated hydrocarbons, undue exposure to the vapour can be harmf'ul. A check must therefore be kept on the concentration of trichloroethylene vapour i n the atmosphere.
