This Practice describes the following:

When continuous on-line monitoring of rotating equipment should be provided

Installation considerations specific to type of monitoring equipment

General calibration and functional checkout considerations

Documentation recommendations

Rotating equipment covered includes centrifugal compressors, centrifugal pumps, gears, steam turbines, gas turbines, electric motors and generators, and other shaft driven equipment.

Purpose

This Practice provides guidance for the application of machinery protection instrumentation on rotating equipment in accordance with the applicable API Recommended Practices (RP). Considerations are also given to condition monitoring for enhanced performance and predictive maintenance.

This Practice can be used as a guide for the following:

Preparing bid specifications for rotating equipment machinery protection and monitoring instrumentation

Retrofitting monitoring instrumentation on existing installations

Identifying areas of responsibility for design, installation, and/or maintenance of rotating equipment-monitoring instrumentation

Preparing bid specifications for a Continuous Machinery Monitoring System (CMMS)
