This Standard applies to Bridge Structure assets owned by LU.
This Standard defines the requirements for assets through the following lifecycle stages:
Inception and design
Construction, installation, testing and commissioning
Inspection
Analytical assessment
Condition assessment and certification
Maintenance
Strengthening and Renewal
Decommissioning
Evidence of compliance
This issue of the standard replaces 1-051 A2.
Purpose
The purpose of this Standard is to define the whole life cycle requirements for Bridge Structure assets..These assets comprise:
Rail bridges
This category of structure covers structures owned by LU carrying LU tracks, including:
Underbridge
Overbridge
Viaduct
Girdering
Way beam
Highway bridges
This category of structure covers structures owned by LU carrying public or private road traffic, including:
Overbridge
Viaduct
Footbridges
Underground structures
This category of structure covers:
Covered Ways
Subsurface tunnels (i.e. cut and cover brick arch tunnel)
Subways
Culverts
earth retaining walls, including gabions
Ancillary structures and components
This category of structure covers:
Cable bridges
Pipe bridges
Pipe crossings over / under track
Signal gantries
Gantries over railway
Crash barriers
Longitudinal Timbers
In defining requirements specifically applicable to assets, this Standard complements Standard 1-050 (Civil Engineering - Common Requirements) that defines mandatory requirements generally applicable to all Civil Engineering assets including the Bridge Structure assets.
A supporting Manual of Good Practice G-051 gives guidance and explanation on Bridge Structure assets.
