INTRODUCTION

Defence Specification DEF-131 has an introductory text giving instructions for the use of the tables that it contains, but this text is kept as short as possible and gives only the essential minimum. The aim of the present guide is to expand these instructions and, by giving a detailed commentary and a number of examples, to clarify the method of sampling inspection given by DEF-131.

The discussion in this guide assumes a manufacturer to be presenting batches to an inspector who accepts or rejects them on behalf of a customer, in the light of requirements laid down by the customer. It is not suggested that this pattern is universal-for instance, the manufacturer may sometimes be required to do the inspection himself, the inspector may sometimes lay down the requirements without reference to the customer, and so on. The pattern adopted here been taken simply as a basis for the discussion, and where some other pattern is in force, the guide will need interpreting in its light.
