scope:
This document contains minimum operational performance specifications for Emergency Locator Transmitters, (ELT), to ensure that they will:
meet the environmental constraints of a crash,
meet COSPAS-SARSAT system requirements for satellite processing of distress signal (primary alert),
be compatible with homing devices used for Search And Rescue (SAR),
not adversely affect normal aircraft operations.
The word "equipment", as used in this document, includes all components and units necessary for the ELT to properly perform its intended functions; for example, the "equipment" may include a battery power supply, a transmitter, a crash sensor (with transmitter activation circuits), antenna, remote monitor and control unit, interconnecting cables, and mounting brackets and hardware. In this example, the "equipment" comprises all of the foregoing components and units. However, it should not be inferred from this example that every ELT design will necessarily include all of the foregoing items. This will depend on the specific design chosen by the manufacturer.
