The payload canister consists of a canister shell and two cargo bay doors driven by air motors. The cargo bay door operations are controlled by a flow control valve with three positions (open, neutral, closed). If the door speed control valve is in the open or closed posititon and the flow valve is inadvertently moved out of neutral, the cargo bay doors will open or close. Unscheduled operation of the payload canister doors could result in personnel injury or damage to a payload or canister door.
