This special report discusses how concrete pavement has long been considered the environmentally and economically sustainable pavement choice, primarily due to its longevity. This longevity ensures that the desirable performance characteristics and environmental advantages of the pavement remain essentially intact for several decades. This report also presents several lesser known features of concrete pavement that also support the case for concrete pavements' sustainability, including: lower fuel consumption and emissions, recyclability, use of industrial byproducts, reduced use of natural resources, urban heat island mitigation, smog reduction, lower energy footprint, and improved water quality. This report expands on these important features of concrete pavement that contribute to its legacy as a cost-efficient, sustainable, and green choice for highway pavements.
