Abstract:

Because a design change had been made to the proven Mariner design, the Viking orbiter flight radio modules developed short circuits caused by solder balls shorting terminal lugs to ground. Review related applications for known solder ball problems, and evaluate each design to determine whether solder can flow into uninspectable areas.
