Lessons Learned – Eliminate Potentiometers from Flight Critical Position Indicators (1995)

active, Most Current
Organization: NASA
Publication Date: 31 July 1997
Status: active
Page Count: 2
scope:

Abstract:

Potentiometers (pots) are low reliability items. Yet Mars Global Surveyor used 8 pots for confirming solar panel deployment that were non-essential, yet a single failure could have jeopardized the mission. Eliminate potentiometers from deployment designs unless intermediate position readings are essential and the spacecraft lacks a redundant sensor.
