Lessons Learned - Glass Cased Components Fractured as a Result of Shrinkage in Coating/Bonding Materials Applied in Excessive Amounts (1963)

active, Most Current
Organization: NASA
Publication Date: 3 October 1996
Status: active
Page Count: 3
scope:

Abstract:

Shrinkage during the curing of hard set, epoxy based, conformal coating caused cracked glass cases in many axial lead diodes in Ranger and Mariner flight computers. The lesson recommended investigating coating and bonding material properties, avoiding excessive amounts of coating, and performing post-cure inspection.
