Abstract:

An articulating solar array collided with the MRO spacecraft due to inadequate definition and verification/validation of system-level design requirements for implementing the appendage's keepout zone in flight software. Construct models to ensure requirements discovery is complete, provide a robust appendage motion backstop capability, ensure precision in requirements language, and never ask control laws to exceed your control authority.
