scope:

This British Standard specifies requirements for ladders with single bar rungs intended to be fixed permanently to structures, including high structures such as chimneys, silos and bins, to provide means of access. Requirements for associated platforms and safety hoops are also given.

This standard does not cover fixed ladders and companionway ladders that provide access to machinery, which are covered by the following:

BS EN ISO 14122, Safety of machinery - Permanent means of access to machinery

- Part 1: Choice of fixed means of access between two levels;

- Part 2: Working platforms and walkways;

- Part 3: Stairs, stepladders and guard-rails;

- Part 4: Fixed ladders.

This standard also does not cover permanently fixed roof ladders, which is covered by BS EN 12951.
