Description of Driving Event:

The winches are used to lift and lower the FRCS mezzanine access platforms at the 207 foot level of the RSS. Should they fail during retraction or extension operations, the platform could fall and breakaway from its hinge and wire rope tether, resulting in possible damage to the orbiter and/or injury to personnel. As an interim control, platforms are being tethered with a 1/2" nylon rope during all lifting operations.
