NOTE - Importance of sampling
Sampling is equally as important as testing and every precaution shall be used to obtain representative samples which show the true nature and condition of the materials they represent, without segregation or bias. Failure to use care in sampling can increase the risk of acceptable material being rejected and of unacceptable material being accepted.
These methods set out the principles to be observed in sampling naturally occurring or manufactured road aggregates and the details of packaging, transportation, and subdivision of the samples obtained for any of the following purposes:
(a) Preliminary investigation of a potential source of supply;
(b) Control of the product during production;
(c) Control of the operations at the point of use;
(d) Acceptance or rejection of the materials;
(e) Monitoring performance of the materials during and after construction or service.
Details of the sampling plan and the sample source shall be recorded for reference in subsequent tests.
